Michigan State Alcohol Ban Stops at Luxury Suite Doors

Fans of Michigan State University can't drink alcohol in Spartan Stadium ... unless they can afford a seat in one of the stadium's new luxury boxes.

The Associated Press reported Sept. 17 that while alcohol is banned everywhere else inside the stadium for college football games, beer and wine will be sold in the 24 luxury suites up until kickoff. No outside alcohol will be allowed, however.

"There is a symbolism to this issue," said MSU President Lou Anna Simon. "There is a reality to how one provides amenities to donors who give different levels of resources to the university."

"Essentially, this becomes our tailgate," said Lee Grulke, an MSU alumnus. "Whether you're 50 feet away from the stadium or in a structure that doesn't necessarily connect to the stadium, it's nice to be able to have a couple beers."

Alcohol was banned from the stadium last year after a series of drinking-related problems; alcohol also is not permitted outside the stadium or on Munn Field, a popular tailgating location.
